Koh
Chang Animal Foundation
The
Koh Chang Animal Foundation is a non-profit animal health
clinic that was established by Lisa McAlonie in 2002. It is
located on the island of Koh Chang in Thailand near the Cambodian
boarder. The foundation is supported by private donations.
Luckily, companies such as Bayer, Pfizer and Merial have supplied
medicines and vaccines occationally. If you make it to the
island please contact Lisa on her mobile phone 089-042-2347.
You can also contact by email mcalonie@hotmail.com
The
main focus of the foundation is to educate the local people
how to provide their animals with good general health care
and offer the services necessary to do so. There is no official
billing system at the foundation. It is asked that people
pay for the materials used, but the time and treatments are
free. People usually cover the cost of materials, plus they
give a donation towards the care of the temple and street
animals. The people of Koh Chang have known Lisa for over
8 years now; they have come to trust her. If someone needs
help with their animal and they have no money, it’s not a
problem. They already know that they can come to the foundation
to receive animal health care for free. Sometimes a donation
of fish, rice, washing powder or bleach is offered (and greatly
appreciated).
The
services provided at the foundation include:
- General
health care
- Initial
vaccinations
- Yearly
booster vaccinations
- Sterilization
(for population control)
- Parasite
control
- Wound
management
- Emergency
services (most common are car hits and poisonings)
- Hospitalization/critical
care
- Paperwork
for traveling animals
How
to help with donating supplies
We are also in need of donations such as: surgical instruments,
drapes, suture material, surgical staples, surgical glue,
medicines and anything else that can be spared.
Please
talk to your local veterinarian or hospital. Ask them if they
have any medical supplies that they would like to donate to
a charity animal health care center in Thailand.
How
to help financially
We need all the help we can get !!
All
of our funding comes from private donations.
Lisa
has put in 90,000 US$ of her own money and can no longer support
the foundation by herself.
Any
person interested in donating funds to help support the continuation
of the Koh Chang Animal Foundation may do so.
Direct
deposits can be made at the Bank of Ayudhya Public Company
Limited.

Staff
Denise
Vet nurse from Scotland

Denise
was with the foundation for a couple of weeks in 2007. We
were very happy to have her. She is wonderful with handling
dogs and correcting “naughty” behavior. We hope Denise will
return one day.
Karla
Vet nurse from UK

Karla
is a qualified veterinary nurse with 17 years experience.
She was with the foundation from 2005 until 2007. Her help
and knowledge base was invaluable to the clinic and its patients.
She helped daily to run the clinic and also did field visits.
She covered a variety of services for the animals, all around
the island. We miss Karla dearly.
David
Temple monitor and coordinator from UK

David
was with the foundation from 2004 until 2007. He visited the
temple on a daily basis. His visits were essential to maintaining
welfare and identifying trauma to animals that did not have
owners and were dumped at the temple. His reports were phoned
into the clinic and relevant action was taken as required.
David was a wonderful supporter of the foundation but has
moved on to manage a new local elephant camp. We wish David
all the best in the future.
Megan
Vet nurse in training from the UK

Megan
came to join the foundation in 2007. She is now only 19 years
old but has been traveling in South East Asia since she was
16. Megan has studied with previous, and visiting, nurses
and vets at the foundation and has become a very good student.
She left in March 2008. We wish her to return one day as a
certified vet nurse.

Nurse
Juliet & Bob from UK
Retired vet nurse from the UK

Nurse
Juliet has been very generous to help us out at the foundation.
She has given us many things to make our work easier. The
digital camera she donated took most of the photos on this
web site. Her daughter, Sasha, owns a resort on the island.
Juliet lives in the UK with her partner, Bob.
Dr. Irit Hillel
Veterinarian from Holland
Dr.
Irit came to help at the foundation in 2003. She is the initial
force and provider of courage that drove Lisa to continue
forward to establish the foundation. She lives in Holland
with her husband, Bruce, and their 2 sons. We have tried to
contact her many time but we can not locate her.
Dr. Chris Darmody
Veterinarian from Australia
Dr.
Chris came in to help us in September of 2007. She was only
here for a short time but she was very fun to work with. She
donated her time to get a broken tooth out of a VERY big black
Labrador. We hope to see her come back again.
Drs. Richard & Ruth Lysons

Drs.
Richard and Ruth came to help the foundation in 2005. They

Dr.
Edda is a very warm hearted and generous person. She has been
the cornerstone of the foundation since 2004. She has come
to the clinic to train our nurses and consult on the services
provided. Had it not been for Dr. Edda, we would not be able
to maintain such a high standard of services. Dr. Edda lives
in Germany with her partner, Jonny, and their dog, Sushi.
We owe her our very top respect.

Staff
Kane

has been with KCAF since February 2008. His compassion for
the animals is outstanding. He is at the clinic all week and
it is a delight to see his smile in the morning. His learning

complain !!
Mr. Sompong

Mr.
Sompong works for the Ministry of Livestock in Thailand. He
helps us out by coming in once a week to do flank spays on
female dogs. He is our only “paid” staff. We are teaching
him important English phrases like..”You the man !!”. He and
his wife just had their first daughter. Congratulations to
them !!
Lisa

Lisa
takes care of all of our books. Luckily she can read Thai
to sort through all of our receipts. Lisa lives on the island
with her husband, David, and 8 cats !! She has been with the
foundation since 2004.
Tracy
Vet nurse in training from the UK

Tracy
is our vet nurse on the island of Koh Maak. She lives there
with her partner Robbie and her cat, Dusty. Tracy has been
with the foundation since 2006. She has spent her own money
to buy medicines to support the animals on Koh Maak. If we
have a case that can not be resolved on Koh Maak, Tracy coordinates
the transport to Koh Chang.
Lisa
Founder/vet nurse from USA

Lisa
first arrived on Koh Chang in 2000 as a dive instructor. She
soon noticed that the animals on the island were in desperate
need of veterinary care. With over 20 years experience of
providing volunteer veterinary care, she decided to start
helping. At first, this involved only vaccinating animals
and emergency support. Things progressed and the need for
a clinic was obvious. She learned the Thai language and offered
her services for free to help out the local people. She gained
valuable experience over the last few years. She has studied
with numerous doctors from various countries around the world.
Her knowledge and understanding of animals has grown immensely
since 2000.
Volunteering
Help
is always appreciated and welcome!
There have been a number of traveling veterinarians and vet
nurses who have helped support the foundation by donating
their holiday time to perform medical services and educate
our volunteers.
We
are always looking for help….veterinarians, vet nurses and
people that love animals are always welcome. Tender loving
care is one of the most important factors for animal health
and well being, so even if you just want to cuddle and clean….please
contact us.
We
would like to make a very special THANK YOU !!! to Dr. Somsak
of Koh Samui. He has helped us out enormously over the last
couple of years. We think he is the #1 vet in all of Thailand.
