top leisure and sporting destinations.
In
Pattaya anything is possible. The city offers
an endless array of sporting, leisure, shopping

have no problem filling your day. For those keen

aromatherapy, stress-free, fragrant oil or hand
& foot massage at any time of day or night.

for scuba diving, and the area has several dive
shops offering lessons. Sailing charters are also

Shopping
Shopping is a major pastime in Thailand, and Pattaya
is no exception. Incredible shopping is available
non-stop both day and night. Pattaya has a fabulous
range of shops and markets catering for all budgets
and tastes. Malls, department stores and supermarkets
thrive in Pattaya, making it simple for visitors
to find products that appeal.
For
souvenirs, beach essentials and general knick-knacks,
hit the beachfront stalls which line Beach Road
and the lively Walking Street. Open all day and
late into the night, goods here reflect a diverse
array of tastes: fake T-shirts, surf wear, ethnic
crafts, Buddha statues, DVDs, jewellery, tailoring,
pharmaceuticals and even portrait drawing.
For
something a little more local, head to the all-new
Floating Market, situated on Sukhumvit Road. The
market is spread over 30 acres and claims to be
the biggest floating market in the eastern region,
featuring 111 shops selling food and specialties
from all parts of Thailand. Some 80 boats are
on standby to ferry tourists around the compound
linked by a network of canals. The compound also
features model farms, sunflower fields, a wood
products museum and regions dance performances.
Those
not keen on haggling, and perhaps craving a little
air-conditioning, can hit one of several large
shopping malls in the city, including the Royal
Garden Plaza, Mike Mall, Central Festival, Carrefour
and the Outlet Mall, just south of town. Everything
can be found at these meg-malls, for example,
at the spectacular new Central Festival shopping
centre, located right next door to the Siam Bayview
Hotel, you can find ALL the big names: B2S, TopShop,
Aldo, Guess, Mango, Esprit, Benetton, Super Sports,
Power Buy, Office Depot and more!
Location
The Siam Bayview Hotel is located a mere 170km
south-east of Bangkok in down-town Pattaya. This
vibrant sea-side city is the jewel of the Eastern
Seaboard and a favourite hangout of Bangkokians
and foreigners alike. Convenience is the name
of the game: Suvarnabhumi International Airport
is just a 90-minute drive north of Pattaya, easily
accessible via the Chonburi Motorway. You will
quickly find that the Siam Bayview Hotel has one
of the best locations in town - just meters from
the beach, beside bustling Beach Road and next
door to the all-new Central Festival shopping
mall. So sit back, relax and enjoy all this great
town and hotel have to offer. To help you get
around we've compiled this helpful list of travel
dos and don'ts.
Travelling
to Pattaya
Airport
transfer:
For your convenience, a transfer from Suvarnabhumi
International Airport can be provided through
our hotel's Travel Counter. When booking, simply
advise us of your flight number and arrival time
and our limousine driver and airport representative
will be waiting to meet you at the arrivals' gate.
Advance booking required. Please contact reservations@siamhotels.com
for arrangement and enquiries.
By
car:
Pattaya can be reached in a two-hour drive along
the Bangna-Trat Highway via Bang Pakong, Chonburi
and Si Racha. However, visitors can avoid Chonburi
by opting for Highway 36, the new Chon Buri -
Pattaya - Rayong route.
By
bus:
Regular air-conditioned buses depart from Bangkok's
Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and Northern Bus
Terminal (Mochit 2) daily. Buses depart the Eastern
Bus Terminal every 30 minutes, from 5:00 am to
10:00 pm, and from the Northern Bus Terminal frequently
between 5:00 am to 7:00 pm. For prices and exact
schedule, contact: Eastern Bus Terminal, (0) 2391
2504/8097 or the Northern Bus Terminal, (0) 2936
2852/66.
There
are also a few minibuses that travel directly
from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport
to Pattaya, departing 9:00 am, 12:00 pm and 7:00
pm daily. For more information, call (0) 2535
1111.
By
train:
The State Railway of Thailand offers a daily train
service departing from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong
Station at 6:55 am. It takes about 4 hours (on
a good day!) to reach a station on the outskirts
of Pattaya, from there a short taxi ride will
get you into town. Call (0) 2621 8701 for more
information.
By
air:
Bangkok Airways provides daily flights connecting
Ko Samui with U-Taphao Airport, which lies about
30 kilometers south of Pattaya.
Getting
Around Pattaya
Baht Buses:
"Baht
Buses" are blue pick-up trucks with a hard
canopy top and bench seats in the back. They are
able to seat about 8-10 in the back and 2-3 in
the front. Around Pattaya all you have to do is
flag down the driver with a small gesture, get
on, wait until you are about five meters from
your exact destination, ring the bell on the ceiling
and your driver will stop. You pay him through
the window on the pavement side. Do remember to
keep some change for these as they don't like
changing large notes. The standard fee for anywhere
on the route is 10 baht for foreigners and 5 baht
for Thais (foreigners with Thais are expected
to pay full fares for both). Fares for longer
stages are written in the back of every taxi.
From Central Pattaya to Jomtien Beach you may
be charged 20 baht (10 for Thais) to go over the
hill, and also to Naklua in the north.
Taxi:
Proper taxis with air-con are available for trips
anywhere, not just to the airport. These taxis
are not normally metered and any trip is subject
to bargaining. However there are various standard
fares, and most taxi firms advertise these. Most
of the drivers speak a bit of English and are
great sources of information. Otherwise, our hotel
is happy to arrange transport to any destination,
please speak with our Travel Counter for details.
Moto:
Motorbike-taxis are a way of life in Pattaya.
If you want to get to somewhere quickly or conveniently,
particularly at busy times, these are your best
option. On every corner in Pattaya, you'll find
a gathering of motos. They are there 24 hours
a day, 7 days per week. However, be warned that
the driving can be erratic and somewhat dangerous.
These drivers will take you anywhere for 20/50
baht each depending upon the distance. If you're
riding three-up it will cost you less. As always
in Thailand, remember to negotiate the price before
heading off.
Bus:
Pattaya Council has recently started a bus service
with three routes around the city and up to Sukhumvit
Road and Jomtien Beach. These buses are not as
regular or as easy to find as a Baht Bus or moto
though. A leaflet about bus routes cab be obtained
from the hotel.
Hire
cars and motorbikes:
Another practical way to get around Pattaya is
by hiring a motorbike. You can hire one for around
150 baht a day, or less for longer periods. These
scooter-type bikes (e.g. Honda Dream) are extremely
reliable and easy to ride having no clutch when
changing gears. Thanks to congestion, local traffic
doesn't move very fast so they are actually ideal
vehicles for experienced tourists to get around
on. However, if you are a first-time driver you
may want to reconsider as the roads are not friendly
to beginners.
Cars
can be hired too, but driving them in and around
the city is likely to be a frustrating during
peak times and anywhere on Sukhumvit Road. In
general, four wheels are only really useful if
it's raining or you intend to explore the area.
There are many hire firms around the city with
prices starting at around 500 baht a day for older
cars, to a more realistic 1,200 baht for more
modern or four wheel drive vehicles. If you would
like a car and driver, please speak to the hotel's
Travel Counter who will happily assist.
