There is a ‘place of peace’ nestled amongst coconut palms which leads to a private crescent beach touching brilliant turquoise sea. This place is Amanpuri, on Thailand’s jade green island of Phuket, where nature and culture harmoniously merge, yielding a pure tranquillity where less means more and luxury is found in graciousness.
the resort
Nestled amid coconut palms overlooking its very own beach, Amanpuri is a tranquil haven where relaxation and regeneration come naturally. Amanpuri embodies the inner spirit of the Thai culture while allowing nature to reign supreme. The natural beauty combined with sincere warmth and a genuine soul allows for complete rejuvenation. Amanpuri
translated in Sanskrit as place of peace was opened in 1988, the first
born to the Aman ‘family’. This tranquil prodigy has pride of place on
Phuket in a secluded natural coconut grove on a peninsula leading down
to a soft, crescent shaped beach overlooking a mesmerizing turquoise Andaman
Sea. Amanpuri continues to evolve with a peaceful purity, which is reflected
in its gracious service, and the sympathetic construction of its pavilions,
villas, and stylish midnight blue pools.

beach
If unwinding usually takes you a day or two, then at Amanpuri it will take seconds; as a perfect, private, soft cream beach waits beckoning, on a sea to dream to. Light refreshments are served all day with water sports on-hand, and when the sun dips behind the horizon, relish a flame-grilled lobster as your toes wriggle contented in the cooling sand… Amanpuri’s
beach is lined with sun deck chairs and umbrellas. Beach attendants serve
light refreshments as well as cool cocktails, cold towels and ice. Complimentary
windsurfing, snorkelling, sea kayaking, body boarding, Hobie cat and Laser
sailing are available, with attendants providing qualified instruction
as needed. A nearby reef is flush with fish. Complimentary fins, snorkels
and masks are provided. The best snorkelling is above the coral reef located
between the swimming platform and headland in front of the villas. Snorkellers
can hand feed or swim among the fish. Searay Bowriders driven by trained
crew are available for waterskiing at a nominal fee. All activities are
available between December and April, weather and tide permitting.
cruises
Amanpuri offers perhaps the best and most extensive selection of boats and cruise options of any resort in Asia, with a comprehensive range of boats from small dinghies for a picnic lunch at a nearby beach to luxury bluewater cruises aboard the 60ft Aman I. Amanpuri operates the largest and most comprehensive resort charter fleet of professionally crewed vessels in Southeast Asia for exclusive use by resort guests. Overnight excursions – east to the dive mecca of Thailand’s Similan Islands or south into Malaysian waters – are increasingly popular. The luxury 60ft Aman I can accommodate 14 passengers on scheduled half-day cruises to Phang Nga Bay and Koh Kai Nok. At 90ft in length, Maha Bhetra was designed for extensive cruising in the Andaman Sea. A crew of five, including a cook, two deck hands, a captain and an engineer support this teak luxury cruiser. Sealion, a classic Chinese sailing junk typical of those found in Singapore and Hong Kong a century ago, is available year round for idyllic lunch excursions and beach barbecues in Phang Nga Bay. The fastest and most versatile boat in the fleet is Blowfish, a 38ft fibreglass vessel fully-equipped for game or bottom fishing, as well as diving and snorkelling excursions. Blowfish is ideal for destinations further afield, has plenty of shade and can carry up to 12 passengers. Complete with crew, Amancruises’ vessels range from 20 to 110 feet in length, carry full insurance and maintain a variety of recreational equipment aboard.

amanpuri weddings
Set high on a peninsula overlooking the Andaman Sea, Amanpuri’s Villa Homes provide a picturesque setting for an informal Thai Buddhist, Christian or non-religious wedding blessing. Set amidst the coconut trees the two to six-bedroom Villa Homes have a living and open air dining sala, separate bedroom pavilions and spacious common areas with their own pool. Villa Homes offer the seclusion and intimacy of a private home as well as access to Amanpuri facilities and services. For the ceremony, they can be decorated with flower petals, fragrant jasmine, orchids and a floral archway. White and pale pink lotus flowers adorn the pool whilst the open-air spaces are lit with candles and torches. A traditional
Thai Buddhist ceremony is performed by up to five monks who garland the
bride and groom with a string sai mongkon that is then entwined to symbolise
the coming together of two individuals. The couple are then blessed with
holy water. The wedding party may wish to elaborate on the blessing with
traditional Thai music and dancers, a Thai feast, elephant rides or perhaps
a cruise on one of Amanpuri’s fleet of luxury vessels. These are available
for half-day, full-day and overnight charters. They can also serve as
the venue for a small ceremony.
location & map First mentioned by Ptolemy in the 2nd century, Phuket was a regular port of call for Arab and Chinese ships. Portuguese and Chinese settlements began to appear in the 18th century, and until the middle of the 19th century, tigers and elephants wandered freely in local jungles. The mountains of Phuket form the southern end of the Phuket mountain range which extends for 440km from the Kra Isthmus. Phuket is 50km long and 21km at its widest point. Connected to Thailand’s Phang Nga province by bridge, the island is surrounded by the azure Andaman Sea, which joins the Indian Ocean to the south. Well over half of the island is covered by forest; the northern Khao Phra Thaeo National Park protects more than 20 square kilometres of rainforest.
