ABOUT
KOH CHANG

With
white sand beaches, waterfalls, coral reefs and an archipelago
of more than 50 islands, un-crowded Koh Chang is a real tropical
paradise. Thailands second largest island. Mangroves and
beach forest line the shores, and the whole island supports
a huge diversity of wildlife.
Stretching
down the eastern coast are countless idyllic islands and escapist
small beach resorts. The most glimmering of the jewels is
Koh Chang. White sand, turquoise waters and an exquisite setting
for a perfect tropical vacation.

Koh Chang - a paradise it is. A place for recreation in a
tropical setting, with peace in mind, to recharge the energies
of life. But this paradise is easy to reach. Koh Chang is
only 330 km east of Bangkok, or 4 hours by road/40 minutes
by air - plus 30 minutes by ferry.

Not
well known, Koh Chang is actually the second largest island
of Thailand, behind Koh Phuket. Despite its size and the close
distance from Bangkok, Koh Chang is least known, undeveloped,
untouched and forgotten for decades.
Koh
Chang Marine National Park is a secret yet to be explored.
Nearly 75% of the Marine Park is protected by law, under the
jurisdiction of the Forestry Department of Thailand. This
explains how it remains a virgin wonderland protected from
divesting development.

The
locals as well as visiting guests are pleased the way it is.
A paradise for those who appreciate nature as its basics more
than the sophisticated over-developed modernity as we find
it in Phuket.
The
coastlines of Koh Chang archipelago is a spectacular work
of natures art and there are beautiful beaches, coves and
bays around the islands. Colorful coral reefs, clear blue
sea and warm waters. On the islands we find fertile rainforests,
un-trekked jungles, high peaks, breathtaking waterfalls and
fascinating wildlife. All waiting to be discovered.

A
Trip to the Island
To
travel to Koh Chang, you always arrive at the Laem Ngop ferry
terminals first. In Laem Ngop there are 3 piers. The oldest,
directly situated at the port of Laem Ngop, is not in operation
at present.
Second,
Laem-Ngop-Pier (Tha-Khrom-Luang or also Tha-Laem-Ngop), is
situated approx. 700 metres west of Laem Ngop. Third, Center-Point-Pier
(Tha-Center-Point) is about 3.5 kilometres in the northwest.
These piers serve both car and passenger ferries.
The
mini busses from Bangkok arrive at Center-Point-Pier, also
many of the individually chartered taxis from Trat arrive
here, whereas the local pickup-taxis (Songthaows) head for
Laem-Ngop-Pier.

A
further pier for car ferries is in the Thammachat Bay (Aow
Thammachat), approximately 15 kilometres west of Laem Ngop.
However this jetty is only required for those who come with
their own or a rented vehicle.
Koh
Chang has various piers, which are almost all situated on
the eastern side of the island. The majority of traffic is
handled at the two Dan-Kao-Piers. The boats from Laem Ngop
take approximately 45 minutes to the Dan-Kao-Piers. The car
ferry takes about 50 - 60 minutes and arrives at the Dan-Kao-Ferry-Pier
(Tha-Ferry-Dan-Kao), which is situated 400 metres southeast
of Dan-Kao-Pier (Tha-Dan-Kao). The car-ferry from Thammachat
Bay stops at the Ko-Chang-Ferry-Pier (Tha-Ferry-Ko-Chang)
in the Sapparot Bay (Aow Sapparot), 3 kilometres northwest
from the Dan-Kao-Pier.
Meals, fruit, snacks and beverages are available at all the
piers and on the car-ferries.
From the eastern bus terminal Ekamai in the Sukhumvit Road,
A/C buses for 257 Baht (first class)?(Tel. 02/391 25 04)?and
Non A/C buses for 188 Baht (Tel. 02/391 80 97) leave hourly
between 6.00 am - 11.00 pm to the province capital Trat, 315
kilometres away from Bangkok, is the starting point to Koh
Chang and to Cambodia. The travel time may take between 4
and 6 hours depending on the departure time. Bus from Ekamai
direct to the ferry leaves twice per day, 7.45 am and 9.45
am cost 250 Baht.
Facts
About Koh Chang

Koh
Chang is very popular among visitors. Situated in the nearest
distance from Laem Ngob, it takes 1 hour to reach the desired
destinations on Koh Chang. The best season to visit the islands
is between October and May. During the rainy season from May
to October, visitors are not allowed to the islands south
of Koh Chang; for example, Koh Kut, Koh Mak, Koh Wai and Koh
Kham. The boat trip to Koh Chang can be made all year round.
In the rainy season, a boat will sail along the inner coast
of Koh Chang because the island's long and large shape provides
shelter from sea winds and waves. Visitors will trips on land
to individual destinations.
White Sand Beach
White
Sand Beach (Haad Sai Kao) is a beautiful sandy beach at the
northern end of Koh Changs west coast. It is about 2.5 kilometres
long and lined by rocks, over-hanging palms and broad-leaved
trees. The southern 1.5 kilometre long area, located at the
road, is during the season the busiest part of the entire
island.
In
addition, the northern part, probably the most well-known
and longest visited beach on Koh Chang, is today, after over
15 years of tourism, still quite quiet. The mountains covered
with close rain forest, almost reach the beach in the northern
part, where the road winds itself steeply up the mountain.
Although
the entire beach is flat like almost everywhere on the west
coast it is still suitable for swimming at either high or
low tide.
Climate
Koh
Chang is the ideal location for the real rest as the weather
there is very comfortable with the average temperature not
too cold or too hot. Ko Chang is influenced by the northeastern
and southwestern storms. That triggers limitations to the
water transportation to the group of islands. Between May
and October, which is the period of southwestern monsoons,
the west coast is always visited by storms and thus, not safe
for ferryboats. Between November to April is very safe since
there are quite a few storms. Most of Trat areas lie in the
Gulf of Thailand. This makes the province abundant with tourism
resources. Trat has as many as 52 islands, especially Ko Chang
include sea, waterfalls, and forest. The province is also
the source of red sapphire, fine shrimp paste and sweet Ra-Kum,
a kind of palm of genus Malacca with sweet and acid taste
Koh
Chang is great if you love the outdoors.
There
are many activities to attempt you. The sports are wide range
from scuba diving to trekking. Koh chang has one of the most
beautiful scenery. The basic watersports are also available
e.g. snorkeling, banana boat, kayaking, etc.
On
the island you can also rent a motorbike to travel around
Koh Chang if you like sight seeing or you can bring you own
car on the island. There are ferries which run from the mainland
to the island every 3 hours and the prices are reasonable
too.
Fisherman's
Village
Bang
Bao is a photogenic village built out into the bay on stilts.
There are several small restaurants noted for their fresh
seafood. The Bang Bao Bay has been a sanctuary for fishing
boats seeking shelter from the monsoon for over a century.
It has lately become a resort and recreation area with bungalows
built on selected scenic sites, fine seafood restaurants that
guarantee fresh daily catches and local shops of souvenirs.
Bang
Bao Bay (Aow Bang Bao) is a well protected bay at the southwest
end of Koh Chang. It measures about 1 kilometre in width and
in length. The quaint fishing village Baan Bang Bao is built
on stakes far out into the bay and has become quite a popular
attraction. Many seafood restaurants offer a rich selection
of fresh seafood and small shops sell souvenirs or refreshments.
Waterfalls
on Koh Chang

Koh
Chang accommodates several waterfalls of different sizes,
which all have plenty of water at the end of the rainy season
(Oct/Nov) and are most delightful during this time.
The
4 most well-known can be reached by foot, one or two however,
under difficult conditions. Good footwear should be worn and
company is advisable in case of a possible accident as no
help can be expected.
Khlong
Plu Waterfall (also: Khlong Prao Waterfall): The branching
to the waterfall is at the main road between Baan Khlong Prao
and the northern end of Khlong Prao Beach. A 2 kilometre concrete
road leads to the Marine-Park-Office. There you will find
a few small restaurants and here you also have to pay the
entrance fee of 200 Baht for foreigners or 20 Baht for locals.
After approximately 500 metres walk, you arrive at the foot
of the falls which are about 20 metres high. Here you will
find a pool suitable to bathe in.

Just
before you reach the pool there is a small path on the right
which is not very well marked. After 15 minutes walk on this
path you reach the top of the main falls where more pools
can be found, also suitable for a refreshing dip. A beautiful
view down to the sea also awaits the visitor. (Good footwear
is an advantage!)
In
8 - 10 hours one can walk in company of a Ranger to the Than
Mayom Waterfall on the east coast of Koh Chang (see 'Sights',
'National-Marine-Park'). Only the more experienced trekkers
should try this path alone and should get good documents beforehand
at the Tourist-Information or at the National-Marine-Park-Offices.
Than
Mayom Waterfall: This waterfall consists of 3 individual levels
of different sizes. The first can be reached in 10 minutes
simply by foot from the entrance. Here there are 2 pools in
which one can take a refreshing bath. In another 30 minutes
a rough and narrow path leads up to two further falls. The
third fall is called the King Rama Waterfall.
Ke
Rhepet Waterfall (also Khiri Phet Waterfall or Tri Petch Waterfall):
From Baan Salak Phet a more or less easily passable jungle
track leads, after 1.5 kilometres, to the beginning of a footpath.
After a few hundred metres, one reaches the first level of
the 12-storey-waterfall, where a small pool to bathe in waits
for you. The further levels of the waterfalls are reached
over a very difficult adventurous path from where you have
a breath-taking view over Salak Phet Bay.
