in a big house, Ocean Blue has decent sized rooms running
the length of its one long corridor. All have a private bathroom,
with cold shower and bucket flush toilet and a mattress on
the floor as hard as the wooden floorboards beneath it. A
large deck out the back is ideal for lounging and watching

Koh Chang is the biggest of the islands in the Koh Chang National
Marine Park and the second largest island in Thailand (after
Phuket) and lies in a group of 47 islands that have been awarded
National Park status due to pristine rain forest and marine
life. Several other nearby islands offer accommodation including
Koh Mak, Koh Wai and Koh Kood. Development on the islands
is largely limited to coastal areas due to forest protection
and mountainous terrain. Despite being only 300km from Bangkok
the region has only recently begun to open up to tourist development.The
great beaches, impressive waterfalls and stunning scenery
together with a choice of accommodation and entertainment
that ranges from basic to real luxury ensure that there will
be something of interest to visitors on all bugets. Some of
many activities available include good diving, water sports
and snorkeling, hill trekking, elephant jungle trekking and
exploring the islands by kayak, cycle and motorbike. There
are interesting local villages to visit and boat trips are
available to explore or stay at other islands in the group.
How
to reach Koh Chang.
By Air
A domestic airport, Bangkok Airway, on the mainland near to
Laem Ngop (ferry departure port for the islands), This will
provide regular flights between the region and Bangkok, a
distance of some 320 km, cutting travel time from 4-5 hours
to just 45 minutes.
By
Car
There are two main driving routes from Bangkok, both around
310 km long. The first route is to take Highway 3, the Bangna
Trat road. There is a quicker elevated tollway running above
Highway 3 that costs 55 Baht for cars. Continue until the
Chonburi Bypass and here turn off onto Highway 344. Follow
this road past Ban Bung and when you reach the Klaeng Cross
roads turn back onto highway 3 and continue on towards Trat.
Alternatively
you can leave Bangkok on the Motorway that is a continuation
of the Rama IX, Srinakarin road. This road goes onwards and
meets highway 344 where you can continue to Trat.
Buses
From Bangkok
Minibus and full sized bus service pick up from guesthouses
around Khao San Road and other Bangkok locations on request
and travel directly to ferry departure points at Laem Ngop.
Bookings can be made from any of the scores of travel agents
in this area. The buses leave at 7-8 am taking 5-6 hours and
cost around 180-250B for a single trip including ferry crossing.
Minibuses return to Bangkok at 11am everyday from Laem Ngop
and bus leaves Centerpoint (Dan Kao) at 3pm.
Frequent buses also leave for Trat from the Eastern Bus Terminal
(Ekamai) and the Northern Bus Terminal (Mor Chit).
Beaches
White Sand Beach (Had Sai Khao): As the name suggests, this
is a very long beach of the fine white sand. The beach slopes
smoothly into the sea and is very wide during the low tide
attracting large groups of visitors, especially in the evening,
when it transforms into a playground. Regular soccer and volleyball
games are played as the sun sets rights off its shore. There
are many reasonably priced bungalows here. The main runs right
past all the resorts, shops, restaurants, pubs and coconut
groves.
Khlong
Prao Beach and Laem Chaiyachet
This is another long sandy beach. At the northern part of
beach is the rocky Laem Chaiyachet which is an ideal site
to watch the magnificent sunset or the sunrise above the southern
hills of Bang Bao. Laem Chiyachet is a favorite on-shore fishing
ground.
Kai
Bae Beach
This is a beach of scenic beauty where you can see the sunset
and view islands, some so close and tempting you may feel
like taking a canoe across. Of special interest may be the
Koh Man Nai reveals its picturesque beach and you can walk
to the island in chest-deep water. Boats, canoes, sea-kayaks
and dive shops are ready to serve you in your exploration.
Bang
Bao Village
The beach at Bang Bao has clear water with rocks and coral
off its shores. A good place to fish, snorkel and swim. A
fishing pier has been built near the cape which is also a
great viewpoint for the whole of Bang Bao Village. Getting
to Bang Bao is a challenging task as the road from Kai Bae
is steep and winding. This area is very interesting because
residents of Bang Bao Village have constructed their home
on wooden pillars in the seabed -they use wooden bridges to
link the houses together. There are several small restaurants
noted for their excellent fresh seafood.
Klong
Son Village
Klong Son is the first village reached on the drive to the
beaches from the ferry arrival points. Parts of the village
are built over the sea in an attractive.
Salak
Phet Village
This village is stay in the far south west of the island and
also noted for good seafood. A recent initiative has been
the introduction of home stay accommodation.

Most
of Koh Chang is covered in rain forest that has been largely
undisturbed due to the mountainous terrain of the island.
There are also good examples of mangrove forest ecosystems
where the islands numerous streams meet the sea. Marine National
Park status was awarded to the island chain in 1982 in an
effort to preserve the exceptional land and marine environment.
The forests of the isl nd support a large range of wildlife.
A survey conducted for Thailands National Park Service in
1992 recorded 29 different species of mammal on Koh Chang.
These included the Stump-Tailed Macaque, Barking Deer, Wild
Pig, Javan Mongoose and Silvered Langur. Birdwatchers will
be pleased to know that seventy four bird species were found
including the Nightjar, Pacific Swallow, Yellow Vented Bulbul
and Oriental Pied Hronbill
Additionally
the survey noted 42 different species of amphibians and reptiles.
Snakes that inhabit Koh Chang include the Python, Rat Snake
and King Cobra. Malayan Mud Turtles, Monitor Lizards and ubiquitous
Gecko are also found on the island. There are also a variety
of very vocal frogs. The aptly named Koh Chang Frog is a species
unique to the islands.
The
list of available activities in the area is long and includes
such diverse activities as hiking, diving, snorkeling, bird
watching, kayaking, and sailboarding. Mountain bikes are available
for rent in some areas, and of course you can always rent
a longtail boat or speedboat for a day of sun and adventure
on your own private island.
Hiking
trails abound on the islands, especially Koh Chang itself.
There are trails for hikers of all skill levels, but advice
on any particular trail should be sought from an informed
local before beginning any jungle trek. Some of the most beautiful
treks pass through the jungle to one or more of the stunning
waterfalls that are sprinkled throughout the islands.
If
you are going to visit Koh Chang (Elephant Island) on your
trip, nothing is more appropriate than a trip on elephant
back through the jungle. Several guesthouses and resorts can
provide you with information and bookings at your request.
Whether
your taste is for a small canoe or kayak, if you want to take
a spin in speedboat, or if youd rather hire a local to take
you around in his longtail boat for a day, there is a boating
adventure to satisfy your appetite available on most of the
islands in the archielogo.
Snorkeling
can be arranged on most of the islands and on the mainland.
If diving is your cup of tea, your best bet is to contact
one of the dive centers on Koh Chang - there are several PADI
certified dive centers there with knowledgeable staff to guide
