About 280km southeast of the teeming metropolis of Bangkok in the Golf of Siam, near the Border of Cambodia, lies Thailand's second largest Island Koh Chang. The Island is part of an archipelago with another 46 Islands (this is counting every rock that is above sea level) called the Koh Chang Marine National Park.

The name means Elephant Island because the hills look like a herd of elephants. The Island is about 30km long and about 13km wide and is densely covered with tropical jungle. The undulating hills are full of rainforest and sometimes covered with clouds, the highest peak being Khao Salakpet at 743 m.

Koh Chang plays host to monkeys, snakes, wild birds, wild pigs, butterflies and a variety of other animals. Some say it?s still the best preserved jungle of Southeast Asia. The fascinating jungle and the beautiful beaches, mostly on the Western side of the Island, cast a spell upon most visitors to Ko Chang.

Until the great boom in 2001, about 3 000 people lived here; making a living from fishing, the collection of mussels, farming of Pineapple, Durian, Papaya, Mango, Coconut and Rubber trees. The tourists, mostly backpackers, where at that time a seldom but welcome source of extra income and added a kind of variety to island life. Today a lot more people live on the Island, and tourism is now a primary source of income for many people. This is illustrated by the many new Hotels and the skyrocketing prices for a land on the Island and can be seen at the new Airport, between Saeng Tung and Auo Thammachart (on the mainland). However, this Island still has its own unique beauty, and its hard for anybody who visits it once not to come again.

We sincerely hope that the island maintains its unrivalled beauty and that the many developers adhere to the new eco-tourist friendly approach to development without spoiling the natural beauty of the land.

Activities

ELEPHANT RIDES AND INTERACTION
Elephant Camp - Ban Kwan Chang: is the name of one Camp in the North of the Island. In Khlong Son you have to turn in the direction of the Jungle, and than drive on this Road about 4km till you see the Camp at the left side!

They have several Programs, from a simple ride to a training to an Elephant Mahout with sleeping Place in the Camp! More info at (66) 01-9193995.

There are two more Camps, one between White Sand and Khlong Praow, the other one at the end of Khlong Praow. Both are at the left side from the Road in direction to Bang Bao.

Ko Chang has many different places to wine and dine

WELCOME TO KOH CHANG HOTELS - LIVE MUSIC
Koh Chang has numerous venues that support live music with a very high standard of entertainment and musicianship rivaling the rest of the World!

Most of the venues are on the Western side of the island with Tantawan Bungalows providing the Sticky Rice Blues Band and Lek Slow Hand every night of the week from 9.30pm until 12.45am. They also provide excellent accommodation and food.

Oodies Bar on the main street of Koh Chang has an excellent covers band that plays a variety of genres, with guest appearances by Oodie most nights. The band plays between 10.00pm and 1.00am and the venue has excellent local and French cuisine available. You can also find good accommodation at Ooodies, just ask the man himself!

The Sabay Bar is the hub of boisterous activity on the island and has an interesting covers band from the Phillipines every night between 9.00pm and 12.00am, followed by the latest in dance grooves from their in-house DJ.

Sky Bay are another venue that have live music mainly catering to Thais with some western standards thrown in - very loud and pool tables are available for those that seek adventure!

FISHING IN KOH CHANG
You can book tours with many Resorts, Hotels and several other operators at nearly every beach, where you can go snorkeling, fishing and touring to some other Island in the Ko Chang Marine National Park.

The most tours are very rich on fun and some time you get a look at such great things as Dolphins or other big Fishes. My advice to all is that it is a thing you should not miss, especially if you travel in a small group!
