Koh Chang

Being the second largest island in Thailand it comes as a surprise that Koh Chang is still relatively untouched by tourism.

Lying 330kms east of Bangkok, in an area covering 52 smaller islands. Koh Chang is the largest in the group with a rain forrest, coconut plantations, clear water and very nice beaches.

Diving and Snorkeling

Diving is fun...

And that’s what it’s all about!

So no worries about transport, equipment, food, drinks, dive planning and guiding. We take care of it all. You just focus on the wonderful experience of diving, which is great here for all levels. We dive in small groups because we believe in a personal service. And once out of the water, you will find all facilities you need on board.

Never dived before and no time for a full course? No problem, we offer discovery scuba dives. After a pool session, we will guide you through your first diving experience.

Fun Dive (two dives)
As a certified diver you are interested in diving new sites and enjoying the underwater scenery to the fullest. We at the Dive Adventure understand this like no other, so we put all our effort in to making your day one to remember.

Daily we bring our boats to different dive sites around Koh Chang. The trip with the boat itself is a stunning ride along the various islands situated in the Koh Chang archipelago. Nothing is rushed and everything is looked well after.

It all starts by picking you up from your resort or hotel. From here on we take over and bring you to the dive centre where you check in and will be introduced to your divemaster for the day. Your divemaster will check together with you the equipment that you need for the day and make sure that everything fits. All rental equipment is in top shape and serviced every month by our in house technician, so only the best maintained equipment reaches you.

As you are on holiday we would like you to enjoy it to the fullest and don’t want you to go home with a hernia, so we do all the carrying for you…you do not have to touch a single thing!!! Once on the boat, you will be introduced to the rest of the staff who will be with you that day and they will give you a briefing about the boat, the safety equipment and procedures as well as what will happen during the day.

Your divemaster will set up your equipment and before you jump in the water, you will receive a detailed dive and divesite briefing from us.

Groups are kept small, because we love to dive ourselves and don’t like big crowds underwater. Our divemasters are guys and girls dedicated to their jobs and they love what they are doing. This results in amazing tours around the reefs and lots of things to be observed.

After your first dive there is time to swim or snorkel around a bit and to get your energy level back up so we serve you an excellent buffet lunch and a assortment of local fruits.

The second dive will be on a different site in the neighborhood and will again give you an amazing amount of underwater life to watch and observe.

Shortly after the end of this dive, the boat will return to port where you will be given some time to look around, sign your logbooks, put the necessary stamps in and relive the stories from the day, before we bring you back to your hotel or resort.

As you can see this is a day of diving like it should be!!!

Discovery Scuba Dive
You don’t have a certification but still want to go diving? No problem!!

We have a program which is especially designed for you..

Our Discover Scuba Diving program introduces you for the first time to the underwater world. We take our time for you and try to make you as comfortable as we can. After all this is a big step for you and we want you to be as confident and relaxed as possible so you enjoy your adventure to the fullest.

That is why The Dive Adventure’s program takes a day and a half of your time. The first half day we cover the basic theoretical principles with you, do not worry, you will not have to spend a minute in a classroom…everything is explained to you on the poolside because shortly after we take you for an in water training session.

Here is where the real fun part starts, your instructor will get you in your equipment and systematically you will take your first couple of breaths underwater.

In order to give you the full service and attention that you need we limit the amount of participants to 2 per instructor in the sea.

This is also the place where you will be diving the second day. You will make two dives under the direct supervision of your instructor and this to a maximum depth of 12m. These dives takes place on two different sites which are easy to dive but still offer you a lot of interesting things to see!!

On the boat you do not have to worry about anything, we will set up your equipment and double-check it for you and we will make sure that you have everything that you need in order to make it an unforgettable day.

If you want, we can provide an underwater photographer on your dives so that you have a nice reminder of your memorable adventure and that you can show it to all your friends.

When we return to the shop in the afternoon, you will get a certificate of recognition from us and you can have a chat with the other divers about your day and then you probably realize that your first underwater adventure is a fact!!

Snorkelling
If diving is not really your thing but you still want to see all the beauty which lies beneath the surface than this is an activity you will like.
When the rest of the family is into diving and you want to accompany them and have a splash and look around… than this is something for you as well.

Every day our boats go out to different sites around Koh Chang. Here at The Dive Adventure we understand that you are on holiday and that you’re looking for that special spot where you can snorkel around in a tropical sea without having to push away 200 other people.

That is why we always go to sites where there is no crowd, but that has stunning corals and schools of fish to offer. Most of the dive sites around the island are suited for snorkeling; the entire area is quiet shallow and doesn’t have strong currents. So both people snorkeling and diving can enjoy the same sites.

The Dive Adventure Team has got specially trained snorkel guides ready for you. Before we board, you will be given fins and mask and snorkel so that you are well equipped to enjoy your day out. On the boat our guides will give you a briefing before you go in the water. You will receive information about the different kinds of aquatic life, the water conditions and safety instructions as well. Your guide will be with you in the water showing you all the nice underwater life and assisting you if necessary.

In between the sites we will serve you lunch, which is in buffet style. As you’re on holiday the local food will certainly tickle your taste buds as will the selection of local fruits do.

After you’ve explored the second site it is time to return. On the way back you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Koh Chang and the other islands in the archipelago. Once in the port you will have some time to look around in the fishing village before we bring you back to your resort.

Night Dive
Have you ever wondered what it is like to dive after sunset? You will be amazed how much different aquatic life becomes visible at this time of the day.
Sightings of decorator crabs, cleaner shrimps, stingrays, moray eels, squid, barracuda’s, nurse sharks, shrimp fish, nudibranches, scorpion fish and lionfish are just a couple of the exciting things you might find on these dives.

As an experienced diver you will be glad to hear that after a mere 20 minute boat trip we can offer you a couple of amazing sites for night diving and that these trips are organized two to three times a week in high season according to demand.

But also if you haven’t made a night dive before you are more than welcome to join us on this trip. We will team you up with an instructor who will explain to you what you need to know and what to do before taking on this exciting dive.
This dive can count towards one of the dives needed for your Advanced Open Water license or even for one of the dives for Night Diver Specialty.

During this trip we at The Dive Adventure stick to our basic rule of small groups in order to let you enjoy your dive to the fullest.
If you do not have a torch, one can be rented from us. The torches we rent out, are from premium quality and do not stop shining after the first then minutes of your dive like we all had before… A spare torch will be provide for every buddy team as is a chemical light stick in order to recognize your group.

In general the night diving ends in the early evening just because of the fact that is early dark here, so after we come back to land, you will not find the entire island a sleep. Which means you can still go out and spend some time with the family or enjoy the nightlife of Koh Chang.

Are your kids between 8 and 12? Let us introduce them to scuba diving in a fun and easy way. Breathing and swimming underwater will easily become second nature to the youngsters as they participate in different games. All our programs are well structured and safe and start in the swimming pool.

Parents are more then welcome to come and watch their new explorers perform. After all, diving is a family affair.

Dive Sites
Koh Chang is situated in the Gulf of Thailand and is surrounded by 51 other islands in the Koh Chang Archipelago. Spread across this archipelago are numerous dive sites that will offer you great diving experiences.

Pinnacles or coral reefs located around inhabited islands form the vast majority of the dive sites here.

Thanks to the tropical warmth of the water there is abundance in corals. These corals are in remarkable good state and offer some spectacular scenes for underwater photography.
The entire Gulf is quiet shallow and that is no exception in and around Koh Chang, which means that you will have long dive times and that there is plenty of natural light to observe the marine life.

The best time of the year for diving is from October until May, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening in our Green Season. During that period we go out weather permitting and always keeping safety and fun in mind.

During the main season diving conditions are superb with visibility ranging to a mind blowing 40 m. On average the visibility is somewhere around 15-20m and the water is nice and warm. Temperatures between 28-30 degrees Celsius are normal. Most of the time there is gentle current that keeps the water clear.

The aquatic life around Koh Chang is abundant, ranging form shrimps, flatworms, and pipefish all the way to the majestic whale shark who visits us more and more the last couple of years. Recently there have been sightings in August, September and October.

Diving and Snorkeling

All dive courses, diving and snorkelling trips are conducted on a large dive boat complete with sundeck, shower and toilet and include full insurance and complementary pick-up service from anywhere on the island.

Our boat is recently fitted out and carries Oxygen and a full medical first aid kit, as well as GPS navigation and satellite phone.

Courses

Interactive, interesting, well structured and above all, fun courses is what we stand for. We strive for quality and spare no effort in providing the best instructors and learning materials that you need in order to get your certification.

Entry level, specialties and professional level courses are performed to PADI standards in order to make you a confident, safe(r) diver.

Small groups will guarantee you optimum learning conditions in which the instructors guide you towards your goals.

PADI Scuba Diver
This 2 day course will teach you the basics.

10.000.- THB

The course takes four days and consists of three elements - academics, confined water training and four open water dives. Courses are conducted with a maximum of four students per instructor and can be taught in your own language.

Starting with an academics session, we will cover all important principles such how a scuba unit functions, how pressure will affect your body, safe diving practices and the buddy system plus information about the aquatic environment. Next we will teach you how to use a dive table to plan how deep and long it is safe to dive for. Academic content is delivered by watching a DVD and then reviewing and discussing the content with your instructor. After each section you answer some simple review questions, but don't worry - the minimum age is 10 years old so you shouldn't find them too challenging. During one of the next days you will also make your final theoretical exam.

Next we get our scuba gear on and go for a shallow water skills session. We complete this in a swimming pool or in the sea (in a shallow bay). Next we'll demonstrate more than twenty skills which you will practice back to your instructor. This includes mask and regulator clearing, buoyancy skills and alternate air source procedures, these skills will get you feeling comfortable and confident in a confined water environment, before we proceed to deeper water.

The final section of the course is open water diving. The first two dives will be to a maximum depth of twelve metres. You'll repeat some of the shallow water skills a little deeper, building up your confidence. Most of each dive will be spent exploring the dive site, learning to control your buoyancy and enjoying the beautiful corals and aquatic life around the island.
For the final two dives of the course we head down to a maximum depth of 18 metres. By this point you should be pretty controlled in the water.

You'll then be issued with your Open Water Diver certification meaning you can enjoy diving anywhere in the world!

Advanced Open Water
The advanced course consists of five open water dives which introduce exciting new areas of diving. The duration of the course is two days. Two of the dives are mandatory - the deep dive and underwater navigation dive.

The deep dive*
We’ll take you right down to 30 metres. We'll make a test to see if you suffer any nitrogen narcosis, we let you make some calculations to test your mental awareness and examine a pressure related object and make a depth gauge comparison to demonstrate the differences between analogue and digital meters. We'll then explore the site and make a slow ascent up to safety stop depth. Providing weather conditions are good we'll make this dive at the Koh Rang Pinnacles or any other deep site in the neighbourhood.

The underwater navigation dive*
We’ll explain the principles to you we use everyday to find our way around the dive sites. This includes compass work and using a timing device, combined with natural navigation such as depth, bottom composition, contour, rock formations, corals and sunlight. You'll complete some simple exercises such as measuring distances and navigating a square pattern and a triangle.

* Mandatory dives

The other three dives are optional - you can discuss with your instructor which dives will benefit you most. Options include:

Peak performance buoyancy: In this dive we aim to get you moving through the water more efficiently, resulting in reduced air consumption (so longer dives). We'll concentrate on how much weight you're wearing and where you are positioning them, how you are controlling your breathing and ensuring your equipment is streamlined. Choosing this dive can make a big progress to your diving.

Night Dive: Something completely different and not to be missed! Armed with an underwater flashlight you'll plunge down into the darkness to explore the reef by night.

Multi level & Computer Dive: Deep diving is fun as it extends the limits of your exploration, but bottom time becomes limited if you follow a single level dive profile. If we move to a more sophisticated planning technique, using a multi level plan (and back this up by wearing a dive computer) we can vastly increase our available bottom time. This also allows us an opportunity to make another great deep dive.

Underwater Naturalist: Learn more about the aquatic realm, appreciating the relationships between different species and starting to identify some of the marine organisms that we see.

Search and Recovery: Find out how to execute underwater search patterns such as a U - search or expanding square. When you locate an object, what if it is too heavy or bulky to safely lift it using your BCD? We'll show you how to utilise a lifting device such as a lift bag, to safely recover the object.

Underwater Photography: Have a go at capturing some underwater snaps using a digital camera with underwater housing. First we'll teach you a few simple rules to improve your chances of getting the perfect shot. We'll burn the photos onto CD so you have a nice souvenir to take home. Costs 1000 baht extra.

Drift Dive: Why fight against a strong current for half a dive when you can 'go with the flow' and have the boat move and pick you up. Great fun flying effortlessly along in the current.

Dive Propulsion Vehicles: Get a dose of 'James Bond Style' under dive propulsion vehicle action! Save air, see more of the dive site and have an exhilarating time in the process.

Emergency First Response
A one day CPR and first aid qualification.

You watch a video during the morning, and then undertake a practical session in the afternoon learning the steps you take in dealing with an accident. This includes assessing the scene, alerting EMS, checking for breathing, circulation, serious bleeding, spinal injuries and shock then progressing onto secondary care. This is followed by a written exam.

Rescue Diver

The rescue course occupies three days - academics and water work.

On the first day of rescue we look at surface problems, tired and panicked divers, rescues where you can remain on the boat and others where you need to enter the water. We also take our first look at coping with an unconscious diver at the surface, and inventory all the objects on the boat which might be useful in an emergency.

On day two we move into underwater problems - sorting out divers who are overexerted, have bad buoyancy or are out of air. We practice solving these problems during the 'disaster dive' where we'll simulate situations for you to deal with. We then start to look at how to manage an emergency, run search patterns and surface an unconscious diver, plus make an egress to the boat.

Day three starts with a review of the skills you've learned, then progresses into final scenarios. You will be in charge of the boat, your instructor and other staff will simulate problems which you will have to manage. Expect the worst - swimmers getting hit by drifting jellyfish, missing divers, unconscious victims and more. . .
Hard work but great fun.

Master Scuba Diver
This is it, you can't go higher! This is the highest education level for recreational diving.

You will be able to say you are one of the most educated and responsible divers and you\'ll earn respect and acceptance from any other diver. It denotes a high level of competence and personal achievement for all divers who earn this rating.

For the Master Scuba Diver certification, you must complete the PADI Advanced, Rescue and five Specialty courses.

Dive Master
The first professional level in diving is a big step up.

By the end of this course you will be qualified to lead certified divers, assist instructors with student diver training, organize diving logistics (such as arranging equipment, diver flow and delivering briefings) plus conduct refresher courses for divers that have had an extended period without diving.

At The Dive Adventure you will become part of our team. You will get a real insight into how the shop runs and as time passes will adopt more and more responsibility, becoming a critical member of our diving staff. Taking a training internship to become a dive professional is a serious commitment. As such you should enter this program understanding the level of commitment needed to succeed. This doesn't mean that we don't have fun!

The duration of this internship depends on you! The minimum number of dives required to pass is sixty.
We cover a wide range of detailed diving theory such as physics, physiology, dive equipment, environmental considerations, industry and agency standards which we have to operate within and decompression theory.

This is accompanied with a comprehensive program of water work.
You'll take part in several skills circuits, getting your demonstrations up to instructor standard. You'll also map a dive site, undertake an underwater equipment exchange with another diver whilst buddy breathing.
You will also make an emergency assistance plan for Koh Chang and complete a number of stamina exercises.
You'll practice underwater navigation and get to know the dive sites around Koh Chang - by the end of the course you'll be leading our customers on guided dives, briefing them, and controlling them in the water and showing them all the great marine life around the sites.

The biggest section of the internship is to assist our instructors with student divers in training. You'll help out on Open Water courses, advanced courses and even rescues. You'll witness all sorts of student diver difficulties which will prepare you for life after graduation - if you can deal with these you can deal with anything!

The way we structure the course is that you'll be assigned to one instructor as your mentor. They'll make sure you are getting everything you need and are progressing through your course. We'll mix up the academics and water work so that your internship is balanced. If you have areas which need improvement, we can put extra work as you progress.
When assisting on courses you'll get to work with all our instructors, along with students from all over the world. One of the best things about being a dive professional is the rich variety of people that you come into contact with!

After you graduate, the choice is yours! You can stick around on Koh Chang and find work as a Dive master or go can go all the way and start your instructor course!!
You also have a great means of visiting some of the world's most beautiful spots, finding work where other people only dream of travelling - Thailand, The Philippines, Australia, Mexico, The Caribbean or Red Sea . . . . Up to you!
